CRANIOSACRAL

Craniosacral Therapy is a technique based on evaluating and enhancing the function of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord.  This fluids primary purpose is to protect the brain and spinal cord by being a shock absorber, but it also has functions of circulating nutrients and chemicals and removing waste products from the brain.

Craniosacral therapy involves assessing the flow, and rhythm of this fluid which presents like a wave like motion.  It has a definite baseline rate of pulsation which includes 3 seconds of expansion and 3 seconds of contraction.

When stress is applied to the body, it ultimately creates restrictions surrounding the central nervous system (craniosacral system).   If, for example, you had an injury to the side of your head, the trauma may actually change the rate and rhythm of this wave like motion. It may actually feel like a lack of movement on the affected side.

This therapy is the application of very light and subtle movements that work with the spine, skull, cranial sutures, diaphragms and fascia.  Many clients report that they do not feel cranial work.  This may be due to the fact that they are expecting the same sensations that they have when they receive traditional massage therapy treatments.

The purpose of cranial work is to enhance self-awareness and resolve traumas, ease the movement of fluid through the spinal column and restore misaligned cranial bones.
